Aditya Pandya on "Language detection in Gmail"

Googling Google posts about a hidden Gmail operator that lets you restrict your messages to a certain language. For example, if you search for lang:pt or lang:Portuguese or language:Portuguese, you'll find some of the messages that contain Portuguese text. You can combine the lang: operator with keywords or other operators. The language detection is not perfect, so not all the messages are labeled correctly.

Gmail could provide an option to automatically translate messages written in a language you don't know and add many other useful features from web search (spelling suggestions, query expansion, search refinements).

Google has already conquered Earth. Now, the world's most popular search engine is turning its attentions to the heavens. The media giant yesterday launched a service called Google Sky that aims to bring the mysteries of distant galaxies to a computer near you.

The add-on to the successful Google Earth whose bird'seye view of the planet is beloved of TV news graphic departments as well as hundreds of millions of internet users, offers a "virtual telescope" into the further reaches of the cosmos.

Using thousands of high-resolution images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope it promises to allow users to float and zoom in on more than 100 million stars and 200 million galaxies.

"Never before has a road map of the entire sky been made so readily available," said Dr Carol Christian of the Space Telescope Science Institute, who co-led the institute's Sky team. "Sky in Google Earth will foster and initiate new understanding of the universe by bringing it to everyone's home computer."

Dr John Mason, of the British Astronomical Association for amateur astronomers, said: "Light pollution and air pollution is now so bad in many areas that all you can see when you look up is a few dozen stars. If this helps people to realise just what they are missing, it is a jolly good thing."

Dr Francisco Diego, from the department of physics and astronomy at University College London, described the program as an "imaginative, powerful and unique tool". He said: "Just as we are about to celebrate the 400th anniversary of telescope astronomy, this initiative will open a new window for anyone to be able to appreciate, explore and discover our fragile position in this vast and amazing universe."

To begin searching the universe online, users can scroll dizzyingly around a 3D map of the constellations from Andromeda to Vulpecula before clicking for a close-up and explanation of what they are seeing.

The images were compiled with the help of Nasa from research by scientists around the world. Among them were the Digital Sky Survey Consortium, the Palomar Observation in California and the United Kingdom Astronomy Technology Centre which provided 20 years worth of images from the skies above Britain. And users can enter their postcode and get a pollution and cloud-free image of what the sky should look like above their home.

Since Google Earth was launched in June 2005, more than 250 million people have downloaded it, combining satellite imagery, maps and 3D graphics to create an interactive atlas of the world now available in 13 different languages. Users can access the new free service by downloading the newest version at www.earth.google.com

Gautam on "Oil & Water Display"

LG Philips has filed a patent application for a new type of thin, flexible display which uses oil and water inside the pixels. Currently, the company uses OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes) mounted on a thin plastic to make its flexible displays.

But this is an expensive process, says New Scientist , because OLEDs are made at such a high temperature that the plastic mounting would melt if the parts were all made at the same time. As a result, the OLEDs are made on a glass surface and then transferred onto the bendy plastic afterwards, pushing costs up.

So instead, LG Philips' scientists have come up with a new way to illuminate pixels on a flexible display. The pixels are made from tiny plastic cells filled with minute amounts of oil and water.

The oil floats on the surface of the water and shrouds the coloured surface underneath it. When electricity is applied across the cell, the oil moves aside, changing the colour of the pixel.

The resulting display is apparently full colour and glossy, like the cover of a magazine.

LG Philips announced a 14.1-inch colour e-paper display in May, which uses a metal substrate instead of more conventional glass. This enables the display to be curved around objects like street furniture - handy for advertising and other promotional purposes.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt was recently at the Seoul Digital Forum and he was asked to define Web 3.0 by an audience member. After first joking that Web 2.0 is "a marketing term", Schmidt launched into a great definition of Web 3.0. He said that while Web 2.0 was based on Ajax, Web 3.0 will be "applications that are pieced together" - with the characteristics that the apps are relatively small, the data is in the cloud, the apps can run on any device (PC or mobile), the apps are very fast and very customizable, and are distributed virally (social networks, email, etc).

To make your Mozilla FireFox load pages faster, make the following changes....

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

This is a 100% successful method.....try it.....and do post ur comments.........

This is hilarious!

Epitome:

The burglary at Bigg City, formerly Mr. Bigg's Family Fun Center,
turned into a comedy of errors early June 10. The burglars tried to
disable a security camera by repeatedly spraying it with WD-40 — it
only cleaned the lens — and spent an hour and 15 minutes trying to
open three safes — apparently unaware that some types require the dial
to be turned two or three times around.

They finally did a Google search for "how to open a safe" and "how to
crack a safe" on a computer in the next room.

"They're not professional safe people," said Colorado Springs police
detective Chuck Ackerman. "No, they're not."

On the other hand, the Google query apparently worked; they haven't
been caught, and they did get about $12,000.

* Multiple Posts
Older members should help new comers out. Point out threads to them if they haven't used the search feature instead of just posting "Search before you post".

* Old Members
If any old member breaks a rule, NO leniency will be shown. Older members are expected to act as role models for new comers, and hence expected to follow all forum rules.

* Post Titles
For quick responses to your queries, please coin the topic of your post properly. "HELLLPPPP MEEEE" or "S.O.S." or "in trouble" or "how to" just doesn't get the right attention. In fact in most cases it prevents people from even visiting the thread.

* Signatures
Signatures will NOT contain links/HTML of any kind. Members sporting such signatures will find them mysteriously deleted.

* Post in the appropriate sections
Not all members visit all the sections. People hang out in sections they usually like more or are more accustomed to. So to get proper help to your problem make sure your thread is in the appropriate section. Read the post below to check descriptions for each section.
For example, if you post a linux query in the "Life & More" section, you might not get the best answers. Most Linux fanatics and gurus hang out in the "Technology Louge" section. So that's the place where you'll get your best possible solutions.

* Replies:
Monosyllabic replies and replies such as "I agree," "Yes," "Cool," etc. will not be tolerated and can be deleted without notice at the discretion of the moderators.

* Rules Change
The rules will change from time to time as we add in new rules when people find loop holes in the older ones. We suggest you check this link at least once a month for any updates, in order to ensure that you are abiding by this forum's rules.

TheCybernator writes

"RIM has announced that they're essentially planning to offer BlackBerry service ... without the BlackBerry. The company plans an app suite that will turn its push e-mail technology into a platform for Windows Mobile 6 devices. Less than a week after a network outage crippled BlackBerry users across North America, Research In Motion announced an application pack for Windows Mobile 6 devices that Canadian software developers said will intensify the competition for push e-mail. The firm has said that the BlackBerry Application suite will appear as an icon on the screen of the Mobile Windows device and load BlackBerry applications such as e-mail, phone, calendar, address book, tasks, memos, browser, and instant messaging. RIM said users will easily be able toggle between the two platforms, one of which would have a BlackBerry-style interface."

Vedant on "Took Eight Days to Crack HD DVD!"

Latest reports indicate that the much touted Gen-Next HD DVD format is not invincible after all...

The story doing the rounds is that a hacker who goes under the name, "Muslix64" was upset at not being able to view his HD movies on his computer set-up, and as such, set himself a seemingly impossible goal - that of cracking the AACS specification in four weeks. He ended up doing so - in just eight days.
Apparently, the dude went about the ordained task quite meticulously. He first bought himself a HD-DVD drive to plug onto his PC, plus a HD movie.

Somewhere down the line, the realization dawned upon him that he could not play the HD flick simply because his video card was not HDCP compliant, and he had a HD monitor plugged with a DVI interface.

What "Muslix64" did next was to complain to the doom9 forum about the AACS specification, saying it was not at all fair for someone to own an HD monitor and then not be able to watch an HD movie that had been paid for.

The result: in six days' time, the title key of the flick appeared in Muslix64's memory, which meant that he had managed to decrypt the movie in all but one afternoon. Not counting the one day that he spent fixing problems such as frame skipping, etc, it took "Muslix64" but eight days to crack code.

"Muslix64" even put together a small program titled "BackupHDDVD", a Java-based command line utility to decrypt HD movies.

The chap went right ahead and made a small video called "AACS is Unbreakeable" wherein one can see the output of 'BackupHDDVD' while decrypting. One can also see the playback of a decrypted movie, and upload it to YouTube.

So where does this leave the emerging HD DVD format? Possibly, at the same place as before...

Yes, there could be a small consumer swing towards HD DVD players, egged on by the availability of 'cheap backups' of original high definition content. There could also be a temporary bias in favour of Blu-ray amongst the mighty Hollywood Studios.

But, as industry observers observe, all of this, even if it should happen, will only be temporary...

Which again brings us back to where we began: the mighty format war between HD DVD and Blu ray...

The company said AVG "Anti-Rootkit" is under open beta test for six months to ensure its ability to protect users and operating systems without the confusion and hassle of false alarms.
According to Larry Bridwell, Global Security Strategist for Grisoft, "Rootkits are computer code that attempt to hide their actions and processes, making the job of detecting code and harmful processes very difficult. AVG 'Anti-Rootkit' is developed to detect and destroy rootkits effectively, without bothering users with false alarms."

Originally, rootkits were used by hackers to cover their tracks after unauthorized access to PCs. Today, these techniques have been re-designed in order to mask the presence of malicious software used to gather and exploit personal information such as credit card numbers and social security numbers creating a serious threat to users.

Like all AVG products, AVG "Anti-Rootkit" offers users free, regular updates, and a simple user interface.

The free version of Grisoft's AVG "Anti-Rootkit" is available only for non-commercial home use. Whereas, the commercial version is available as a 30-day trial version.

Interesting concept. Indeed very interesting. But I don't see the point of creating a whole new front end for something like Google when we can directly use custom greasmonkey scripts to change Google to whatever colour we like.
Firefox, anyone?

Blackle ( http://www.blackle.com )is a front end to Google that works exactly like Google, but with one difference: Its home page and its results pages are black. Why? To save the planet. As it says on the about page, "Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black." The page quotes a 2002 report that maintains, "a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen."

That makes intuitive sense when you're talking about CRTs, but not LCD monitors or laptops, which power their backlight consistently regardless of the image the LCD in front of them is displaying.

Blackle creator Toby Heap pointed me back to the report (PDF file), which, on page 19, shows a tiny difference between power consumed when an LCD monitor is displaying a white versus a black screen. But his main point is this: "Regardless, the idea of Blackle is for people to be reminded about saving energy every time they search the Web."

If you really want to save power when on the Web, here's my advice. Turn down the brightness of your screen. That's going to make a bigger difference than using Blackle or not. Better yet, don't surf the Web using a PC with an energy-sucking $500 high-end graphics card. Why do you think some gaming PCs now come with 1 kilowatt power supplies?

Blackle does look cool, though. Very ninja.

Seeing how the battle for the best processor for the desktop market is currently owned by Intel, everybody else has to try and make up by engulfing other unsuspecting markets. AMD
for one is trying its luck on the mobile market, they've recently announced that they are responsible for the ImageOn processor behind LG's KE850 PRADA phone.

Others aren't sharing the enthusiasm of conquering new worlds, seeking out new civilizations; they have even given up on their own processors, most of them anyway. I'm referring to Apple, which have favored Intel's processors over their successful line of IBM-made processors. They even did a rewrite of the operating system so that it would support the x86 architecture over a 3-month period, and pulled it off. On the other hand, there are manufacturers such as VIA, which have a stronghold on the UMPC and PDA market due to their C3-C7 processors.

But, when there is room for one, there is room for more, and as many of the markets already have a competitors battling for the supremacy on those particular segments, there isn't much headroom for newcomers, or even new ideas. But what about a veteran with a new idea, that might work, and it's just the thing the computer industry would require, some fresh information to feed upon. Guilty for bringing the intel is Sun Microsystems, whose CEO and president, Jonathan Schwartz announced on his blog about new processor, called the Rock, no connection to the guy interpreting the Scorpion King from The Mummy.

The Rock processor has 16 cores, and it can support up to 256Terabytes of RAM “in a single software domain (plain vanilla OpenSolaris, no less)”. The CPU has 2395 pins, 812 used for signaling and 1514 for power/ground purposes, the other serving (apparently) no purpose whatsoever. Schwartz also said about the memory support that: “That is an awful lot of RAM in a single system (and given the cost of memory nowadays, you'd want to post an armed guard next to that machine).” But on the other hand, details such as “how many threads per core; why this chip heralds the golden age of effortless parallel programming; how it brings fault tolerance to the masses” are still being kept secret for the time being, but it sure sounds like whatever they have prepared for us is going to be big. As for a time frame when this product will be available on the market, I'll just have to paraphrase Mr. Schwartz and say “stay tuned”.

pratikkothari on "IPTV"

IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is a system where a digital television service is delivered using the Internet Protocol over a network infrastructure, which may include delivery by a broadband connection. For residential users, IPTV is often provided in conjunction with Video on Demand and may be bundled with Internet services such as Web access and VoIP. The commercial bundling of IPTV, VoIP and Internet access is referred to as a Triple Play. Adding the mobile voice service leads to the Quadruple Play denomination. IPTV is typically supplied by a broadband operator using a closed network infrastructure. This closed network approach is in competition with the delivery of TV content over the public Internet. This type of delivery is widely called TV over Internet or Internet Television. In businesses, IPTV may be used to deliver television content over corporate LANs and business networks. Perhaps a simpler definition of IPTV would be television content that, instead of being delivered through traditional formats and cabling, is received by the viewer through the technologies used for computer networks.

Advantages
The IP-based platform offers significant advantages, including the ability to integrate television with other IP-based services like high speed Internet access and VoIP.

A switched IP network also allows for the delivery of significantly more content and functionality. In a typical TV or satellite network, using broadcast video technology, all the content constantly flows downstream to each customer, and the customer switches the content at the set-top box. The customer can select from as many choices as the telecomms, cable or satellite company can stuff into the “pipe” flowing into the home.

A switched IP network works differently. Content remains in the network, and only the content the customer selects is sent into the customer’s home. That frees up bandwidth, and the customer’s choice is less restricted by the size of the “pipe” into the home. This also implicates that the customer's privacy could be compromised to a greater extent than is possible with traditional TV or satellite networks.

Interactivity
An IP-based platform also allows significant opportunities to make the TV viewing experience more interactive and personalized. The supplier may, for example, include an interactive program guide that allows viewers to search for content by title or actor’s name, or a picture-in-picture functionality that allows them to “channel surf” without leaving the program they’re watching. Viewers may be able to look up a player’s stats while watching a sports game, or control the camera angle. They also may be able to access photos or music from their PC on their television, use a wireless phone to schedule a recording of their favorite show, or even adjust parental controls so their child can watch a documentary for a school report, while they’re away from home.

VoD
VoD stands for Video on Demand. VoD permits a customer to browse an online movie catalogue, to watch trailers and to select the movie he wants to watch. The playout of the selected movie starts nearly instantaneously on the customer's TV or PC.

Technically, when the customer selects the movie, a point-to-point unicast connection is set up between the customer's decoder (SetTopBox or PC) and the delivering streaming server. The signalling for the trick play functionality (pause, slow-motion, wind/rewind etc.) is assured by RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol).

The most common codecs used for VoD are MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and VC-1.

In order to avoid content piracy, the VoD content (the movies) is generally encrypted.

Better compression
IPTV uses a more efficient compression standard than Free-To-Air digital television, resulting in lower bit rates for streams, but higher compression may result in lower quality TV pictures in some instances.

Triple Play
Traditionally, TV has come down one wire cable TV or a terrestrial antenna, the telephone has used another (the "Plain Old Telephone System"), and the Internet has been available on either. Both cable operators and telco operators are starting to offer all three on one wire, which is more cost effective. Triple play is an expression used by service operators describing a bundle of telephony, data and video via a single connection. Triple play also refers to the combination of three services (typically Video, Voice and Internet) bundled together to entice customers to purchase all three products at a reduced rate. A quad play bundle usually includes a wireless component.

Flash memory maker SanDisk said Monday it is teaming with Yahoo's music division to pair SanDisk's new wireless MP3 player with free and subscription-based services from Yahoo.

Sansa Connect MP3 users who have a Yahoo ID and an open WiFi network can listen to LAUNCHcast Internet radio, browse Flickr sets and photos and see what Yahoo messenger friends and other Sansa Connect owners nearby are listening to. Sansa Connect users with a Yahoo Music Unlimited To Go subscription also can download music and listen to or download tracks their friends are listening to or have recommended.

The device also supports all Microsoft PlaysForSure subscription music through a PC connection.

When the 4-gigabyte Sansa Connect is not connected to a WiFi network, the player behaves like a traditional Flash MP3 player and can be connected to a PC. Users can play music and view photos stored either on the player or on an optional microSD card.

You get Macbooks for cheaper. I'd have paid for it had it been a Macbook Pro. But paying for a regular Macbook, and 60 grands, in my opinion is not worth it. The street price for the same specs is estimated at around 55 grands or even lesser.

And, another downside to both the laptops is the amount of RAM. Newer games and even OSes (Vista, for example) mandate a minimum of 1GB RAM on your PC/laptop. Now investing in just 1GB doesn't make much sense, does it?

Vista's long goodbye : Deleting files can take forever

Windows Vista suffers from a bug that causes many machines to stall while deleting, copying and moving files, a flaw that has provoked consternation in online forums.

"I've seen this bug in action, and trust me, it's as if you're copying over a 64k link using only 256mb of RAM," one Reg reader complained. "To add to the problem, you can't cancel or anything."

According to a thread on Microsoft's TechNet site, Microsoft has issued a hotfix for the problem, but it has failed to quell the outrage. For one thing, individual users must get Microsoft's approval before the fix can be downloaded, according to our tipster. And for another, hotfixes are more of a pain to install than patches.

We've contacted a Microsoft spokeswoman, who promised to see if a patch for the problem in the works. Meanwhile, Vista users continue to grumble.

"I simply can not believe that I updated to a new computer and put windows Vista on it to find that it's not even capable of moving and deleting files in an efficient manner," one disaffected user posted in the Microsoft forum. "Microsoft must be kidding! The most basic of features that I use all the time is a slow train wreck." ®

P.S. I know it is old news but it might be new for some people and in my search on forums, I could not find any such topic. If it has been, then please merge it with the earlier thread

Just in time for the iPhone June launch, Microsoft is planning to launch the Zune 360 and 180. The 360 will be a widescreen video and music player available in 40 and 80 GB models, whereas the 180 will be a smaller device similar in size to the iPod nano. Oddly enough, only the 180 model will feature a cellphone — Microsoft believes that the combined cellphone/music player market is better served in compact players. 'Although the default behavior will be to connect the Zune 360 and 180 to a Windows machine and use the default Zune software (which is also undergoing a revamp) it will be possible to put the Zune 360 in to disk mode and the device will be treated like any ordinary USB storage device and will therefore be accessible from Mac and Linux machines too. The built in indexing in the 360 will allow you to easily search for songs, however out of the box it's not possible to create playlists on the 360 itself, they still need to be managed by the Zune software.
