Airy Optical Beams

Scientists have made the first observation of an unusual class of optical waves called Airy beams. Unlike most types of light waves, Airy beams have the ability to resist diffraction over long distances, and can also freely accelerate during propagation.

These unusual features may enable Airy beams to be used in applications such as particle manipulation and in nonlinear media. The observation of Airy beams in both one- and two-dimensional configurations have been reported.

About

The NMIMS IEEE student branch was started in the year of 2006 with an initial student member strength of over 80. Our branch is affiliated to the IEEE Mumbai section. From its very inception, it has been one of the most dynamic IEEE student branches in Mumbai.

Our student branch works in accordance with the different objectives of IEEE and tries to provide the students of NMIMS a competitive environment involving organising and participating in a range of activities aimed at enhancing their academic, professional and career lives, whereby their talents can be brought to light through its events. It has been consistently trying to spread the spirits of engineering and innovation coupled with dynamism and intellect.

We are a dedicated team trying to gain exposure to new technical advances and great career opportunities through team meets and various other events, held regularly, to keep ourselves abreast with the latest developments in cutting-edge technology.

    Disk Technology Takes Nobel Prize

French scientist Albert Fert and Peter Grunberg of Germany have won the 2007 Nobel Prize for Physics.

They discovered the phenomenon of “giant magnetoresistance”, in which weak magnetic changes give rise to big differences in electrical resistance.

The knowledge has allowed industry to develop sensitive reading tools to pull data off hard drives in computers, iPods and other digital devices.
